Dead Frontier Help???

I currently just recently played this game for the first time called "Dead Frontier". I have a lvl 13 chef and I keep on dying like crazy. Maybe because im not leveling up what im supposed to but im just so confused so i decided i will restart. Any tips on what i can level up and what i should use, like pistol, rifle, machine gun, shotgun and son on......
