Questions about the ball python?

Is there any other way to feed ball pythons besides mice and other rodents. I want one but my mom is completely against keeping dead rodents (or live) in the house. Another question: how much do they cost? How big does there house have to be? WHats the best soil/sand to put at the bottom? Any other suggestions about house decor? Thanks so much
