When will it be safe to put my pot grown Christmas tree outside?

I had a little pot grown Christmas tree given to me for Christmas. I have moved it from my warm lounge to a cool kitchen and want to evenually put it outside. When would be the best time and how much bigger should the next pot be than the one it is in now (about 6")?
