Question about baby crib design?

I would call it a canopy, to be honest. And you're right, they don't serve a purpose other than decorative. The only thing I would say is not to have it hanging above your baby while they are sleeping in case it falls or baby pulls on it. Could be a safety or choking hazard(I know it's mesh but better safe than sorry, especially with younger babies).
